Everyday role models, like a coach who listens well or a friend who steps in kindly, quietly shape what respect looks like far more than distant, unfamiliar examples. This is worth modelling consistently, not only occasionally when convenient. This is a habit worth passing on to the next generation. This is worth returning to as circumstances and communities continue to change.

Noticing and appreciating these everyday moments of respect helps reinforce them, encouraging more of the same behaviour within families, teams, and friendship groups over time. This holds true across generations, even as attitudes continue to shift. It is a quiet, steady form of everyday leadership within a community. It matters whether the setting is formal or entirely informal.

If you would like support reflecting on this, it is available. 1800RESPECT is on 1800 737 732, and Lifeline is on 13 11 14. There is no need to have the right words ready before you call. It is always worth reaching out, even just to talk something through. Every call is treated with genuine care, whatever the reason behind it.
