Staying connected to a wider community, beyond the person you are supporting, helps prevent the isolation that a demanding supporting role can sometimes bring. This matters just as much for supporters as for anyone they support. This holds true whatever kind of support role someone happens to be in. This is a quiet but essential part of supporting others well over time.

Simple, regular connection, a coffee with a friend or a family dinner, keeps you replenished and reminds you that you are cared for too. This is worth prioritising, not treating as an afterthought to everything else. It helps sustain the very support someone else is relying on from you. It protects your own capacity to keep showing up for others.

1800RESPECT is on 1800 737 732, and Lifeline is on 13 11 14, both available any hour for supporters needing to talk. Whatever you are feeling right now is reason enough to call. You are never a bother for reaching out, whatever the hour happens to be. You deserve the same care and patience you offer to others.
