Supporters are entitled to their own counselling or professional support, particularly if their supporting role has become emotionally heavy over an extended period. It protects your own capacity to keep showing up for others. It reflects genuine, sustainable care rather than short lived effort. This is a habit worth building before it feels genuinely necessary.

Seeking this kind of support is not a sign that you have failed at supporting someone else, it is simply good, sustainable practice. It is a genuinely reasonable thing to prioritise for yourself too. This holds true whatever kind of support role someone happens to be in. It reflects care for yourself just as much as for anyone else.

1800RESPECT is on 1800 737 732, and Lifeline is on 13 11 14, both available any hour for supporters considering this step. It is completely okay to take things one small step at a time. There is no wrong time to ask for a little support. Support is there for exactly as long as you happen to need it.
