Direct action, like calmly addressing a situation out loud, works best when it can be done safely and without escalating risk to anyone involved in the moment. It reflects care for the wider group, not just one person alone. It builds the kind of confidence that grows the more it is used.

Trusting your own judgement about safety in the moment matters more than following a fixed rule, since every situation carries its own particular risks and context. It reflects a genuine willingness to look out for the people around you. It is one of the simplest ways to make a genuine difference. This is worth thinking through calmly before a difficult moment arrives.

If you have taken direct action recently, support is available to talk it through. 1800RESPECT is on 1800 737 732, and Lifeline is on 13 11 14. It is always worth reaching out, even just to talk something through. Every call is treated with genuine care, whatever the reason behind it. You deserve the same care and patience you offer to others.
