Your own safety matters too, and it is completely fine to choose a lower risk option, like delegating or calling for help, over direct confrontation. This matters whether the setting is public or entirely private. This holds true whether the group is familiar or made up of strangers. This becomes easier with a little preparation and practice beforehand.

Bystander action was never meant to require putting yourself in danger, since a safe intervention still genuinely counts and still genuinely helps the person involved. This is worth thinking through calmly before a difficult moment arrives. It is worth trusting, even when the signs feel subtle or unclear. It is one of the simplest ways to make a genuine difference.

1800RESPECT is on 1800 737 732, and Lifeline is on 13 11 14, both available any hour if you want to talk through a decision you made. There is no wrong time to ask for a little support. Taking that first step counts for a great deal, however small it feels. Whatever you are feeling right now is reason enough to call.
